Charlene

Dear Miss ********
My name is Charlene Conroy and I work for the town council here in *****. I was not personally responsible for replying to your email, but it was forwarded to me in case I may have any additional information I could relay to you.
All I can say right now is that what you were told is indeed correct. According to our archives and maps there is absolutely nothing which matches your description to be found in the woods in *****.
There is nothing at all there. But as I said, there is nothing archived here regarding any property or the like, but that doesn't mean that something isn't there. I apologise for being somewhat cryptic.
I would very much like to have you phone my office number at any time between 10.30am and 4pm to discuss what you came across. It will of course be confidential but there is a specific reason we need to discuss what you've asked about over the phone.
My number is ********.

Yours sincerely,
Charlene Conroy.

  1. Cryptic. And very, very intriguing.

I would like to ask you to record the conversation when and if you call her, but that's legally dubious I think. In any case, keep us updated with what goes on.

  3. I haven't phoned her yet. A bit nervous about it. I have a funny feeling we might end up meeting in person. But she works in the council office so I shouldn't be too worried.

  4. I don't think it's that legally dubious, so long as you tell her she's being recorded and she agrees to it. On the other hand, she might not want to be recorded.

  5. @classicsdoll: Exactly. I was suggesting recording her -secretly- over the phone. Ms. Conroy mentioned that everything would be kept confidential; she might not want it plastered over the 'net.

  6. Be careful is all I can say.

Ms Conroy obviously knows something about the woods, and knows full well that there is no record of anything in the council archive. She could be trying to help you, and she could also be trying to cover something up. She is employed in a position where she would be able to hide/destroy any information submitted to the council, and may be concerned with making sure you don't start making noise about the woods. Don't give away any personal details and DON'T meet her without doing prior background research.

Which council does she work at? I live in the UK and would be interested to know.

    Good luck.
